Product showcase: furniture with a cork foundation

September 4, 2024

The Tejo range provides sustainable and eco-friendly furniture options for your space. Swapping out the use of plywood, foam, and polyester fabrics – which are often used in furniture ranges – and instead utilising the eco-friendly artistry of cork, natural latex, wool, flax, and hemp ensures that, in every way possible, Tejo furniture is crafted from the ground up.

Designed to be flexible, circular, and outrageously stylish, Tejo is the new, innovative collection from Isomi. Consisting of a seating system and a table range, Tejo is engineered to suit any space, including private and communal areas.

Tejo represents a bold new approach to sustainable furniture design and a commitment to low-carbon, zero-waste production.

Tejo: an innovation in modular soft seating

The Tejo seating range can be configured to suit your organisation's needs. It offers unlimited options, allowing it to be arranged to suit any kind of space. Whether your aim is to make a bold statement or blend it into an existing environment, the Tejo seating range is fully customisable.

Available in three depth options, with three main elements – including a bench, sofa with a back, and a back-to-back sofa – a range of colour options, with many optional extras, including integrated power and screen dividers, Tejo is adaptable to your liking. It’s also available fully upholstered, or you can choose to have the unique cork base exposed.

There’s a reason this is an award-winning seating system: designed for circularity, it’s recycled, recyclable, renewable, and, not to mention striking, on account of its soft contours and tactile surfaces.

The Tejo seating system is also designed for versatility. It can be disassembled, configured, and reconfigured in countless ways, offering you the flexibility to experiment with different layouts depending on current trends, changes in the business, or moves to a new space.

Tejo table: utilising the quirkiness of cork

The Tejo collection also includes a unique table constructed entirely from recycled cork waste from wine stoppers. The cork is harvested from trees grown in responsibly managed forests in Alentejo, Portugal. It can be harvested from cork trees every nine years without damaging the tree, ensuring it is one of the quickest-regenerating natural materials.

With that in mind, Isomi goes even further by using waste from wine stoppers’ manufacturing process; they aren’t even harvesting the cork directly. Instead, blocks of recycled cork are cut to size and shaped by hand. Any waste from the off-cuts or dust returns to the start of the process and is remade into cork blocks. It’s a truly zero-waste production cycle.

Design-wise, the Tejo tables feature a beautiful cork base in a distinctive shape with a tinted glass top – available in bronze or grey – which seamlessly integrates with the foundation. Together, these two elements create a minimalistic piece that is available at varying heights, depending on your requirements.

Isomi’s core philosophy is to work with materials in their most natural state to create timeless designs... that’s a main component of sustainability. How long will something last?

Sustainability is at the core of Tejo

The Tejo range is timeless, elegant, and durable, making it sustainable in more ways than one. The Isomi brand takes many steps to ensure all its products give back to the environment while revitalising an interior space.

All timber products by Isomi carry an FSC certification; all materials are sustainably and legally sourced. All products are high-quality and built to withstand the test of time. The products arrive in eco-friendly packaging with eco tape, recyclable honeycomb, and pallets. Isomi also has its own reuse scheme in which customers are encouraged to return unused products to be repurposed. Every product under this scheme is recycled or repurposed with samples cut in-house using material off-cuts by in-house CAD engineers trained at the highest level. Regarding company culture, Isomi utilises digital marketing products rather than paper and facilitates electric fleets with charging points equipped at offices.

‘We were looking to try and find materials that were as natural as possible. We’ve replaced the plywood frame with cork, and foam with natural latex. The fabric is natural wool and hemp.’
